Managing Director

Jamel Banton is a Senior Coastal Engineer with more than 20 years’ experience. He has been at the forefront of coastline rehabilitation and protection and resort beach development in the Caribbean. With a strong knowledge of the natural processes that contribute to the geomorphology of the nearshore and a bank of extensive experience, he conceives practical, client-focused solutions that regulators approve. Working with architects and planners, Jamel is able to integrate sustainable shoreline protection and enhancement principles with development plans to satisfy environmental and functional constraints. His foresight and resourceful design approach allow for early-stage identification of cost-efficiencies, leading to a more streamlined design, approval, and implementation process. Jamel’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals. Christopher Hylton is a Senior Coastal Engineer with nearly 20 years’ experience in the industry. He is integral to the design and planning of coastal projects and leads the execution of construction-related projects and issues for the company. With his sound understanding of coastal engineering processes and in-depth knowledge of the marine construction industry, Chris is able to promote technical and economic optimisation at the design stage and to bring in projects on time, on budget, and to specification. Chris supervises Smith Warner’s construction projects throughout the Caribbean region. His registrations and qualifications include: Registered Professional Engineer, Jamaica; Registered Professional Engineer, St Lucia; BSc Civil Engineering (Hons), MSc Environmental and Coastal Engineering.

Director of Operations

Philip Warner is an expert Professional Coastal Engineer with nearly 30 years experience in a wide variety of international and regional coastal and marine projects. He is a strategic and innovative problem solver, as well as an expert in numerical and physical modelling of coastal, marine, and hydrodynamic processes. Philip has worked closely with several numerical modelling systems for coastal process simulation and is able to specify the optimum numerical modelling platform to best solve a specific problem. His experience extends to program planning for oceanographic data collection missions. Philip serves as a mentor and guide for all junior engineers in the firm. David Smith is an expert Professional Coastal Engineer with more than 30 years experience and an in-depth understanding of the unique coastal processes that exist in a tropical environment. He has been at the forefront of integrating climate change adaptation with traditional and eco-friendly coastline protection solutions. David’s experience has taught him to work in concert with natural coastal processes to retain the shoreline’s pristine beauty while transforming an eroded beach into an enhanced and stabilised environment. He has extensive experience at both international and regional engineering firms working on complex marine projects around the world. These include ports and marina designs, shoreline stabilisation projects, and national coastal zone management plans. David lectures part-time in the Faculty of Engineering, University of the West Indies, Mona, and has provided expert witness testimony. Graham has expertise in the development of solutions for environmental problems experienced by the oil and gas and dredging industries. His extensive work requires deep understanding of the movements of waves, currents, tides, and sediments. Elisabeth Mondon is a senior Coastal Engineer with experience in the design of coastal and marine structures, execution of oceanographic data collection programmes, and specification of 3-D physical modelling in a coastal laboratory. She excels in the set-up, verification, running, and interpretation of computer model simulations. Meticulous with data entry, model verification processes, and model execution, Elisabeth ensures our clients’ confidence in the results of her investigations. Danielle Dowding-Gooden is a Coastal and Environmental Engineer who also is proficient in developing, running, and analyzing complex coastal and hydraulic models. She interprets the results of this modelling and clearly articulates the recommendations in her reports to government agencies, development banks, and property owners. The clarity of her explanations and the understandable manner in which she outlines project designs allow clients to make well-informed decisions and give regulators the confidence to approve the proposed solutions. Danielle manages projects with national policy implications, balancing stakeholder goals, the regulatory environment, coastal engineering possibilities, and site restrictions. Her registrations and qualifications include: Registered Professional Engineer, Jamaica; BSc Civil and Environmental Engineering (Minor in Urban Planning); MSc Coastal and Marine Engineering and Management.

Corinne Smith is a Communication Expert who consistently delivers high quality reporting and provides editorial document control. She has the unique ability to edit highly technical materials so that they are understandable for all stakeholders including non-technical audiences. In her role as Proposals Manager, she ensures that the all of the company’s proposals are fully executed from start to finish. This involves coordinating the proposal process, preparing the actual proposals and presenting them to clients. Corinne is responsible for managing the assembly of proposals, documents, and presentations. Her qualifications include an Associate Degree in Hospitality & Tourism, courses in Comprehensive Substantive Technical Editing, and a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts.

Manager of Construction Resources

We are looking for someone to join our team as a full-time Construction Project Manager. We need someone with at least 10 years’ experience on civil engineering projects, experience in delivering construction projects on time and within budget, and experience in contract management and administration. You will need at least a BSc in Civil Engineering. We’d prefer someone with PMP certification, experience in coastal/marine construction, and training in FIDIC. Ideally, you are a Caribbean national, but we’ll consider applications from elsewhere.

Edward Albada is a Senior Coastal Engineer and a Principal at Smith Warner. He has superb team and project management expertise, and smoothly directs consulting and infrastructure development projects to ensure completion on time and on budget. Edward’s strong working knowledge of contracts allows for management of risks and contractual issues to proactively avoid the potential for disputes. During his expansive career, Edward has worked with global engineering firms on numerous large scale and complex developments including ports and marinas and minimizing the coastal impact of oil and gas projects,He has been called as an expert witness to give testimony in coastal development cases. Georgeann is a Junior Civil Engineer whose specialty is field quality control engineering. She is an experienced Clerk of Works and has prepared reports for road infrastructure, coastal beach erosion and the rehabilitation of groynes. While onsite she ensures that the work meets design and drawing specifications and monitors safety and quality. She is the Project Manager’s right hand and raises the alert when there are concerns and provides instructions to field staff on how to make corrections. Georgeann holds a BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of the West Indies.

Duvaughn Henlon

Duvaughn is a Civil and Construction Engineer and Certified Project Manager.  He designs and builds drainage, retaining walls, groynes for coastal designs, breakwaters, seawalls, wastewater treatment plants, and water supply networks, and can do traffic impact assessments. He is able to design coastal structures, as well as manage and construct such designs. He is experienced at leading complex civil and coastal infrastructure projects, managing hundreds of employees and subtrades at the job site. Duvaughn excels at understanding and applying contracts and developing bills of quantities and is an expert in using Microsoft Project as well as ST Waves, sBEACH Design software for modeling, MIKE21, Civil 3D, GIS, and AHEC-HMS for GIS modeling rainwater. He is good at coaching and mentoring juniors both technically and in construction. His qualifications include Certification in Project Management, BEng in Construction Engineering from the University of Technology, Jamaica, and an MSc in Civil Engineering from Harbin Engineering University in China.  Duvaughn is a Registered Engineer in Jamaica.

Ecohydrologist/Aquatic Systems Manager

Allison Pearce is an Ecohydrologist with over 12 years’ professional experience in natural resources management, water resources assessment and monitoring, and land and aquatic ecosystems quality management. She analyses the interactions between hydrological and biological processes within drainage basins and the socio-economic issues affecting aquatic ecosystems functioning. She uses a combination of in-situ and geospatial analysis techniques for assessment of aquatic ecosystems state. Allison manages the aquatic ecosystems department of Smith Warner providing technical advice and recommendations in the fields of ecohydrology, surface hydrology, water resources, and aquatic ecosystems. She is an advocate of integrated watershed management (IWRM) and sustainable designs and ensures that design solutions favour low-impact alternatives. Her registrations and qualifications include: Member of the Society of Wetland Scientists (USA), member of Jamaica Institute of Environmental Professionals, MSc in Water Science Engineering-Specialization: Ecohydrology.

Jason Rimann is a Junior Civil Engineer who has been gaining experience in all aspects of coastal engineering including numerical modelling, design of coastal structures, and construction supervision. He uses mathematical programs to extract and analyse data as part of the design process. Jason’s construction experience includes quantity estimating and budgeting as well as site supervision. He holds a BSc. Civil Engineering (Hons) and a Commercial Pilot’s License.

Miles Harris is a Coastal Engineer with the vision and skills to execute the complete coastal engineering projects from site visit, to modelling, to design, and construction. He specialises in prediction and analysis of winter storm waves that affect Caribbean coasts. Well-rounded and meticulous in numerical modelling, Miles develops the technical specifications for the design of marine and coastal structures. Surveyor

Amiel is a land surveyor who spends most of his days in the field doing topographic surveys and setting centerlines. He also has experience in drafting, which is helpful as he’s often involved in road construction projects, setting out a construction design in the field, setting measurements, and checking volumes. He collects and prepares survey data in a format that our engineering team can use in design software, so naturally he is a team player. Amiel has a BSc in  Land Surveying and Geographic Information Sciences from the University of Technology, Jamaica.

Raygan is a Junior Draftsman with experience in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and QGIS.  He has experience working with the AMANDA System, an electronic tracking system that allows applications at the National Environment Planning Agency (NEPA) in Jamaica to be submitted and tracked online. Raygan holds a Diploma in Drafting & Building Technology from the Vocational Training Development Institute in Jamaica.

Roberto Lyn is a Senior Draftsperson, land survey technician, construction technician, and estimator working on CAD, Civil 3D, and GIS platforms. He graphically represents marine and coastal project elements so that clients can visualise the proposed designs. Such detailed drawings help governments evaluate the regulatory impact of projects and allow contractors to build to specifications. Roberto’s qualifications include: Diploma in Construction Technology; Diploma in Land Surveying and GeoInformatics; Certificate in AutoDesk Architecture, Revit, Civil 3D.

Fabian Jones is a Draftsman working primarily on consultancy design and design/build projects. He is proficient in CAD and 3D rendering, using platforms such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, Lumion, and SketchUp. He prepares conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design drawings of coastal/marine project elements for regulatory bodies, private clients, and for construction tendering. Such detailed drawings help government planners and decision-makers evaluate the broad impacts of projects under consideration. His 3D renderings enable clients to visually appreciate projects’ design and scope. Fabian’s other work includes itemized supply, materials quantity, and labor cost estimation and using GIS tools such as QGIS for data manipulation and representation. Fabian has a Diploma in Drafting and Building Technology and Certification in Civil 3D.

Stefan Ramdeen is a surveyor with 10 years of experience in the construction industry. He has worked on major infrastructure projects such as Kingston, Jamaica’s Port Royal Street revetment as well as on the construction of private homes and schools. Shauna-Marie Gray is a GIS Technician whose skills include shoreline analyses and geo-referencing of images. Shauna-Marie’s work extends to analysis of the underwater terrain ( the seabed bathymetry) to help the engineering team clearly understand the geographic attributes of each project area. She is proficient in QGIS and ArcMap and programs in SQL to extrapolate information from tabular data. Shauna-Marie creates vulnerability maps to assist Caribbean governments with national and regional planning so they can best protect their populations against the risks from natural disasters. Her qualifications include: BSc (Hons) Land Surveying and GIS (double major); Certification in SQL.
