Dr. David Smith is an expert Professional Coastal Engineer with over 30 years’ experience who has an in-depth understanding of the natural coastal processes that exist in a tropical environment. He has been at the forefront of integration of climate change adaptation in coastal design using both traditional “hard”, as well as nature-based, coastline protection solutions. He has extensive experience with complex international marine projects globally, including ports and marine designs, shoreline rehabilitation and/or stabilization projects, expert witness testimony cases in the Caribbean and North America, and national-scale Coastal Zone Management Planning, with both international and regional engineering firms. He is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering, UWI, Mona, in Fluid Mechanics, Open Channel Flow and Coastal Engineering. His registrations and qualifications include: Registered Professional Engineer, Jamaica; Registered Professional Engineer, Ontario, Canada; Member Jamaica Institution of Engineers; Member Professional Engineers Ontario: BSc Civil Engineering (Hons), University of the West Indies; MSc Civil Engineering Hydraulics, University of London; Dip. of Imperial College in Civil Engineering Hydraulics; PhD Coastal Engineering, Queen’s University, Canada.
