Shoreline Enhancement and Beach Creation at Beachlands, Barbados
SWIL was engaged to provide engineering supervision of the works carried out by the Contractor .
The primary objective of the beach enhancement work was to allow for the formation of 5-10 metres of dry beach for the majority of the year. Also, the works are intended to create protection, enhance the beach at the Beachlands property, provide a relatively calm swimming area, and to prevent erosion of the enhanced beach.
For this site we designed breakwaters, groynes and beach nourishment, carried out an environmental impact assessment and construction supervision. Physical hydraulic modeling carried out at the Hydraulics Research Wallingford (UK) was used to fine-tune the design. The works, which have been in operation for some 7 years, have never required renourishment.
